A Cyborg Manifesto

Author: Donna Haraway
Year: 1984 Edit Add
Book: Remediation

We need not be afraid of McLuhan's "formalism," as long as we remember that technical forms are only one aspect of technologies that are simultaneously social and economic. McLuhan's notion that media are extensions of the human sensorium can even be regarded as an anticipation of Donna Haraway's cyborg. McLuhan did bring to our attention the fact that media take their meaning through interactions with the senses and the body, although feminist writers since the 1970s have elaborated this idea in ways that McLuhan did not envision. In short, we can reject McLuhan's determinism and still appreciate his analysis of the remediating power of various media.
